Cuando en 1978 Deng Xiaoping implementó las reformas económicas que transformaron la economía centralizada de la China en una economía de mercado orientada hacia el libre comercio, quizás no se imaginó que unos 25 años después revistas como Forbes empezarían a incluir a los hombres más ricos de China en su lista de los más ricos del mundo.
Y es que, dentro del alucinante mundo del comercio electrónico, pocos nombres han resonado recientemente con tanta fuerza como Temu.
En el centro de este fenómeno se encuentra su fundador, quien, en la actualidad, ostenta el título de el hombre más rico de China, Colin Huang Zheng de 44 años, con una fortuna estimada por Bloomberg en unos 46.500 millones de euros.
Visionario del comercio electrónico
El fundador de Temu, comenzó su carrera en un entorno modesto.
Desde sus inicios, mostró un agudo sentido para identificar oportunidades en el mercado. Su visión era crear una plataforma que conectará a los consumidores con productos de calidad a precios muy competitivos.
Sus padres eran empleados en una fábrica, pero desde niño fue abriendo puertas ya que siempre fue el mejor de su clase y gracias a esto pudo saltar a un buen colegio, luego a una buena universidad para poder estudiar ciencias de la computación y finalmente logró una beca para hacer un máster en Wisconsin, Estados Unidos.
Después de ser becario en Microsoft, decidió ir a una empresa en pleno auge, esta empresa se llamaba, Google, en donde ayudó a lanzar Google China.
De nuevo en China, deja Google para emprender, fundando un e-commerce de electrónica de consumo que terminó vendiendo por una cifra millonaria, luego creó una compañía que daba cabida a empresas extranjeras para vender en plataformas electrónicas chinas y también una empresa de juegos.
Actualmente es el principal accionista de PDD Holdings (NASDAQ: PDD), matriz de Pinduoduo y de su hermana Temu.
Pinduoduo se funda en China en el 2015 y se dedica a conectar a los productores de este país con sus clientes chinos. La magia esta en que Colin Huang es el intermediario que facilita la plataforma, es decir, la conexión.
Por su parte Temu se funda en 2022 en los Estados Unidos replicando esencialmente el modelo de Pinduoduo, logrando allí, el primer puesto entre las aplicaciones de compras para Android en tan solo unas semanas después de su lanzamiento.
Expansión de Temu
El negocio evoluciona hacia otros países y Temu que llega en septiembre de 2022 a Estados Unidos, en marzo de 2023 se lanza en Australia y Nueva Zelanda y ya para el mes siguiente, Temu llega a Francia, Alemania, Italia, Países Bajos, España y el Reino Unido.
Para final del mismo año, Temu se expande por el mercado latinoamericano, mientras que en enero de este 2024 se lanza oficialmente en Sudáfrica, completando su presencia en casi 50 países.
Estrategia detrás del éxito
La plataforma no solo ofrece una amplia gama de productos a precios muy bajos, sino que también se ha destacado por su logística eficiente y su atención al cliente.
La tecnología avanzada y el análisis de datos ha permitido a la empresa anticipar tendencias y adaptar su oferta a las necesidades del mercado. Esta capacidad de innovación ha sido fundamental para mantener su competitividad frente a otras plataformas similares.
Adicionalmente, la estrategia de posicionamiento para llegar a los nuevos mercados es muy simple, usar sus mismos y muy baratos proveedores chinos y desarrollar un marketing de enormes volúmenes de publicidad además de muchos, muchísimos influencers inundando la web con la marca.
Temu controversial
El modelo de negocio de Temu ha sido señalado de que su oferta de productos tan baratos lleva a la empresa a presentar pérdidas y que no hay transparencia en sus cifras.
Supuestas infracciones contra la propiedad intelectual junto con dudosa calidad de los productos que ofrece, con el fin de abaratar costes, también han suscitado controversias, las cuales también incluyen aparentes infracciones al trabajo forzado y promociones engañosas.
Señalamientos públicos de usuarios de la plataforma por supuestas violaciones a la privacidad digital y la manipulación de datos sensibles también se han registrado en diferentes redes y medios de prensa.
Compra como billonario
A medida que Temu continúa expandiéndose, su fundador se mantiene enfocado en la innovación y la mejora continua. Con planes de diversificación y expansión internacional, el futuro parece prometedor tanto para la empresa como para su líder.
